a deeper dive into Star Wars

Star Wars Pets

There’s no lack of creatures big and small in a galaxy far, far away, and is home to a large range of the cuddliest, creepiest, largest, scaliest, wet and wild animals in the galaxy. This is my ranking of my top 5 Star Wars creatures I’d love to have as a pet.

#5: Dianoga

There’s absolutely nothing cuddly about a dianoga – other than it’s tight grip on you as it pulls you under the water. There’s something still charming about the creature, though, that appeals to me for whatever reason (I’m not sure I even understand it myself). Dianogas are highly intelligent creatures with a complex language and even believe in things like reincarnation. I think a Dianoga would enjoy living in one of the many swamps around my apartment building. Unfortunately, there are alligators who also live there, and I’m fairly certain there’s not a single shared activity a dianoga and I would enjoy doing together – they don’t seem too keen on the idea of fetch.

$4: Porg

A porg is something I could easily keep in my apartment – and maybe even have two or three. Absolutely adorable and native to the cliff sides of Ahch-To, Porgs would love all of the bookshelves I have around my apartment as well. I also have relatively high ceilings so there would be plenty of room for them to fly around.

Porgs, however, tend to use whatever they can find to make their nests – this includes both natural materials like twigs and grass, but as well as things like wire and paper. I’d prefer if they didn’t use my things to build their nests. I also already have two pet cats – I think they might enjoy having a porg around more than the porg would enjoy being around them.

#3: Tauntaun

Tauntauns have always been one of my favorite creatures in the Star Wars universe. How cool that they’re a reptomamal (both reptile & mamal) and able to survive in the frigid conditions found on Hoth. Fun fact! I have a Tauntaun keychain on my backpack that I purchased a few years ago in “preperation” for a trip to my grandparents house for Christmas a few years back. There was a blizzard with whiteout conditions and sub-zero temperatures expected. There’s nothing better to get through that than a Tauntaun (ultimately we chose not to risk the travel and stayed home).

Being used to the cold will be a problem though, because Florida is the complete opposite climate from Hoth – plus as we all know they smell pretty bad on the outside (and apparently even worse on the inside).

#2: Bantha

One of my favorite animals on Earth is the American Bison & I love Banthas because they remind me of them. They’re gentle creatures used for milk, meat, and transportation by Tusken Raiders. If I owned a Bantha I wouldn’t need to drive my car to work (and pay for gas). They look soft to pet with their long fur. Lucky for me, Banthas are used to the heat so they would do just fine in Florida.

Unfortunately though, Banthas are a bit too big to keep in an apartment building, prefer to be in heards, and eat a lot of food…

#1: Loth-Cat (or Tooka)

These are most clearly the Star Wars version of a cat & I’ve always been a cat person. I grew up with cats and I currently have two cats of my own, and I’d like to think they would get along great with a Loth cat addition to our home.

Loth-cats can be tempermental, mischevious and full of energy, but what cat isn’t? I’m fully equipt already for whatever a Loth-cat might need after ‘raising’ two kittens. Loth cats are carnivores and eat Loth-rats and even insects. Being that I live in Florida, the occasional palmetto bug makes its way into my apartment – a Loth-Cat would take care of it in no time!
